Journey of Hope (1990). The story of a Turkish Alevi family trying to illegally emigrate to Switzerland, a country they know only from a postcard.

Richly compelling and deeply compassionate, this is probably one of the best films about illegal immigration I've ever seen. It really gets to the heart of this desire to live a better life, and the hope that powers people forwards, even with the unfathomable risk that lies ahead. This grows in tension as the journey becomes more untenable, culminating in a sequence that's harrowing, haunting, and devastating, and I know it's a movie I'll be thinking about for a long time. 9/10.
